Confession time… last year, someone who does not bake, tried to bake in our home. It was a good effort, but in theĀ That’s when it was a great idea to the rescue: the simmer pot!
Simmer pots are a perfect, easy accent for a rainy day, as a preparation before company arrives, and for getting rid of that burning smell when the husband tries to bake.
If you’re new to the simmer pot, fear not! All you need to do is bring water to a boil in a small saucepan, add your ingredients, and then boil them for a little before reducing heat to a simmer. Every now and again, re-upping the water can be done, as well.
As far as recipes go, you can run with whatever you want for this! If you are doing meal prep, the orange and apple peels can be a great, reusable item for you, and as you’ll see below, everything else you might need can be round in the home.
You’ll notice we aren’t using measurements here: go with what you feel! Generally, more than a tablespoon of just about anything is probably overdoing it, and in the case of vanilla, a few drops can go a long way.
Recipe 1: Cinnamon sticks, orange peels, bay leaves, lemon rind, whole cloves
Recipe 2: Apple peels (or juice!), cinnamon sticks, whole cloves
Recipe 3: Vanilla, orange peels
Recipe 4: Cinnamon sticks, lemon rind, rosemary, whole cloves
Recipe 5: Orange peels, cranberries, whole cloves, lemon peels
You’ll notice quite a few fragrant “repeat offenders” here; cinnamon sticks are a common jumping-off point. Let us know on our Facebook page what recipes you like!
